I have a question regarding SSN .The deal is that for the first time I came to US in 2008 on L1B visa . I worked here for 20 months and then returned back to India. Stayed in India for a year , got married and came back again but unfortunately this time on H4 visa. However, I was issued SSN the first time I came . I researched online on forums whether I could use the SSN while I am on H4 and realized that if the SSN has been issued once it is for the lifetime and can be used. Ofcourse I did not use it for any other purpose however while filing taxes last year jointly with my husband, as a dependent, I mentioned it. Now , I got my name change from maiden to married and wanted to update the same on the SSN . I went to the SSN office and gave them the required docs but the lady there told me that since am on H4 , I should not be using SSN at all. I told her about the tax filing and also about the DMV who do not issue a DL, unless, I either have a SSN or a denial letter from SSA . . But that lady gave me a denial letter and told me that she cannot update my records . She told me to get a iTIN and file the taxes with it.Logically, I cannot have a denial letter since I have a SSN .
I feel this is weird, since I cannot understand the logic for getting a denial letter when I already have a SSN . Is there some kind of law or rule that applies in cases like mine. Please advice . Personally I would like to have my SSN , please let me know what can I do .
